what i'm lovin'

Saw this cute idea and lovin' the concept for all couples that come home with a new lil' one.  It's called a "new baby box."  Filled in a decorative crate are items that involve food and booze - yum!  Here's how you can create one for someone you know that is expecting.

{image and wording below via}
  • The Crate: Sara Kate's version is made from a wine crate, which she says you can ask a wine shop or local restaurant for (they'll most likely be happy to unload a few). She blocked out the words "Taco Box" in masking tape, spray-painted the whole thing, and let it dry.
  • The Flowers: Even if mom got plenty of flowers at the hospital, fresh blooms are always welcome (and especially nice when you know that the new family's likely to be cooped up inside for the better part of the first few weeks).
  • The Tacos: Shredded chicken, pork, or beef can be divvied up into freezer bags and used immediately, or frozen for later. Stash tortillas in another Ziploc bag, along with store-bought or homemade guacamole, salsa, rice, and whatever other accompaniments you please.
  • The Booze: New parents are likely to have lots of friends and family visiting, so a six-pack of beer or a bottle of their favorite wine is likely to be a welcome treat.
Other Fun New Baby Box Ideas
Tacos not your thing? No worries. The concept is easily adaptable to whatever you think the new parents would enjoy most. A few more ideas . . .
  • Breakfast in a Box: Include pancake or waffle mix, good maple syrup, fresh fruit, a bag of a favorite coffee or tea, milk, and juice.
  • Easy Italian: Go traditional with a homemade lasagna or baked ziti (these are also great because they can easily be popped into the freezer), or pick up the foundations — a box of good pasta, a jar of sauce, a loaf of Italian bread, and pair with salad ingredients, something sweet, and if it suits you, a bottle of wine.
  • Mediterranean Mezze: Hummus, pita chips, good olives, and grape leaves are perfect for a family who prefers to graze than to sit down to a big meal. Also a good option if you know that they'll have a lot of family in and out.
  • Souper Soups: Soup freezes easily, can feed a crowd, and is likely to last for several meals. Make a double portion of a favorite kind, and divvy it up into multiple plastic containers so that they can enjoy some now, and freeze some for later. Be sure to include some good crackers or bread and salad fixings as well.
  • Chef For a Day (or Night): If it's a really, really good friend (the kind who won't be too polite to tell you that she's exhausted and it's time to go home), offer to come over and cook dinner (let her make menu suggestions) one afternoon or early evening. So long as she's feeling OK, she'll appreciate the company, and it'll give you time to visit with the new parents and baby. Just don't leave any dirty dishes!

refresh

With long sunny days up ahead, what better way than to refresh with a cocktail in hand.  Here are four different refreshing cocktails to drink on a nice, hot day.  All of the drink recipes can be found on Southern Living.  Here are the four that caught my eye {and that I'll be experimenting with once I'm able to have a cocktail again}.

{orange cranberry gin and tonic}

{citrus sangria}

{pear basil sipper}

{vanilla rosemary lemonade}

zig-zag

While being pregnant, I try not to purchase or spend much on too many maternity items, since wear-ability is limited.  I was searching the maternity section on oldnavy.com {since items are less expensive}, and I came across this scarf.  Love the zig-zag print and vibrant colors.  It's a steal too, only $16.94.

zara ~ basic sandal

Just ordered these sandals from zara.  Love the metallic silver mixed in with the nude.  Will be the perfect sandal for spring and summer.  {oh wait... I'll be living in Hawaii, they will be perfect all year round}.

santa monica

I had the pleasure of visiting two Santa Monica treasures: R+D Kitchen and Sweet Lady Jane Bakery.  The cheeseburger at R+D Kitchen was the best "gourmet" burger I have ever eaten. {with it's $14 price tag - but well worth it}.  And what better way, than to top it all off with dessert from Sweet Lady Jane.  I highly recommend the triple berry shortcake {pictured below} ~ it is divine.

what i'm lovin' ~ LAA

I've always loved going to baseball games.  I remember watching games on t.v. with my dad and two brothers when I was a kid, as well as going to Dodgers and Angels games at the baseball stadiums.  Going to college in Orange County, CA led me to become more of an Angels fan.  Whenever the hubby and I are in town during baseball season, we always try to attend an Angels game.  We'll be going to an Angels baseball game on Easter Sunday... which calls for new gear for the growing baby bump.  Now, all I need to decide on is which color tee I want...

Lucas Kane Denson

We had a 4D ultrasound session a few days ago of our baby boy ~ Lucas Kane Denson.  He looks adorable, healthy, and so precious.  He currently weighs 3 pounds and 2 ounces.  He was a shy lil' guy, kept hiding his face with his arms, hands, legs and even his feet.  We received a CD full of images and a DVD of the entire ultrasound session {which lasted about 1.5 hours).
It was a surreal moment, being able to see him.  The entire session is a memory that I will forever cherish.

on my mind ~ Louisiana pics

Our move/trip continues... I leave for California tomorrow, to spend some time in my home state to visit family and friends.  Here are a few instagram shots from our time here in Louisiana.

what i'm lovin' ~ Jamie Hayes

I'm back from our visit to New Orleans.  Had a fantastic time as usual {even though I couldn't partake in any alcoholic drinks}.  Whenever we visit the French Quarter I must always stop into the Jamie Hayes Gallery.  If you have a moment, take time to read about him and his life story here.  Here are a few instagram photos and I also scooped up this exact print for Baby Denson's nursery.  It is one of Jamie's limited edition prints for Mardi Gras 2012.  What better way to remember the year our first baby was born.

off to the french quarter

Will be spending some time in New Orleans until Thursday. {just in case you may not hear from me}.  Whenever the hubby and I visit, we have a list of things to do, such as eating beignets at Cafe Du Monde; always stopping in some of my fave shops like the Jamie Hayes Gallery; and eating our favorite foods {po boys, New Orleans style bbq shrimp, crawfish, etc... etc...}.  This time around we also plan on visiting the D-Day Museum, local jazz joints, and Magazine Street ~ since we'll be having friends from out of town joining us.  Can't wait!!

what i'm lovin'

This week I'm lovin' these giant paper roses ~ they can be used in a wedding, decor for a birthday party, or even a baby girl's shower.  Follow these DIY steps via Green Wedding Shoes to recreate your own.  Fun... fun... and quite beautiful.

on my mind ~ gold cuffs

Gold cuffs have been recently on my mind and I've been searching for a pair.  I finally find some on asos and just ordered them.  Can't wait for them to arrive!

Here's my inspiration on why I wanted a pair ~ via the blog Atlantic Pacific.

crawfish boil

Arrived in Louisiana on Friday night and it's so good to be able to spend time with the hubby's side of the family.  It's crawfish season here in Louisiana, which calls for the infamous crawfish boils.  I'm no expert in peeling them like the hubby's fam, but I did a pretty good job.

{This is about 60 - 65 pounds of live crawfish}

freshly colored

Spring is near ~ which is calling for some new freshly colored outfits.  I heart these pieces from Anthroplogie {all are located under their new arrivals section}.  Although not considered actual maternity pieces, I think I could incorporate these into my wardrobe.

{although this dress is black ~ I still l.o.v.e. it}

naked2

Just purchased the Urban Decay Naked 2 eyeshadow palette, and needless to say.... it's exceptional.  {l.o.v.e.} all the colors and the dual end brush it comes with is fantastic.

goodbye FL

Today we are leaving Florida, which has been our "home" for three years.  Being from the west coast, living here was quite the adjustment, but at least I took advantage of visiting some fantastic spots, making some great friends, and having the opportunity to live in another state was great.

Here are a few things I will never forget or would have never had the opportunity to visit if we never came to the sunshine state:

* Going to a DMB concert in West Palm Beach
* DISNEY WORLD!
* Visitng Tampa and Busch Gardens
* Saints v. Jaguars Football Game
* Visiting Savannah
* Visiting Orange Beach
* Ben Harper concert at the Florida Theater
* Our many road trips to visit the fam in Louisiana {only a "short" 9-hour drive}

... and last but not least, attending my very first LSU Football Game
